Sign-Up for a Staff Book Discussion Session and you could receive a free copy of “Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates, winner of the 2015 National Book Award for nonfiction. Register at HRMS, Learning and Development (login with your WUSTL key and scroll down to “First Yr. Reading Program Staff”). With funding from the Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement and Institutional Diversity, 150 copies of the book will be distributed at no cost to the first 150 staff members who sign-up for a staff book discussion session. Additional support for the program is provided by the University Libraries, FYRP, and the Office of Human Resources. One-hour discussion sessions will take place during the first, third, and fourth weeks of August.
The 2016 First Year Reading Program (FYRP) selection is composed of a series of letters to the author’s son, exploring the idea of race in America. It asks how can we free ourselves of the burden of race? In a letter to incoming students, Provost Holden Thorp wrote, “‘Between the World and Me’ holds special significance at Washington University, where students, staff and faculty are searching for meaningful ways to address the inequities exposed by Ferguson.” Additional information about the author, the book, and a schedule of the sessions are also available at:http://libguides.wustl.edu/AFAS/coates-between-the-world-and-me.
