A message from Chancellor Wrighton to the community

To our Washington University community:

We are shocked and devastated by the horrific shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. This was a calculated, anti-Semitic attack driven by hate. On this day especially, as members of the synagogue gathered to celebrate a new life and honor their faith, it is beyond comprehension. On behalf of the entire Washington University community, I extend sympathy to those whose loved ones have been lost or hurt in this tragedy. To the entire Jewish community, our hearts are with you and we share your grief and pain. We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, this senseless, hate-filled act.

This should not happen anywhere. Certainly, not in this country where the freedom to believe and to pray in one’s own way – or to choose not to – is so core to our nation’s values. All of us must stand together against hate, bigotry and prejudice.
